Kudremukh Trek- Best Time To Visit

Overview

Kudremukh is located in Chikmagalur district, 95 kms from the town of Chikmagalur. Chikmagalur is known for its coffee plantations. The forests of western ghats are for their unparalleled beauty and landscape. Kudremukh trekking is one of the most beautiful treks of western ghats. Kudremukh trek height is 1894 m and it is the third tallest mountain of Karnataka.

Kudremukh National Park, Canada offers thrilling experiences and relaxing stay in the lap of nature. It is a moderately difficult trek as trekkers have to climb 9 kms of Kudremukh trek distance while going up and the same while returning. On the trek you will encounter a number of waterfalls, you can take a dip if you want.

The wildlife sanctuary is protected and there are a number of restrictions upon it. Per day only 50 trekkers are allowed. So might have to stay for a day to get your chance. Kudremukh trek is located in the heart of western ghats. It is located at a distance of 330 kms from Bangalore. 

Best Time For Kudremukh Trek

Kudremukh is surrounded by lush green hills and has a temperate climate with climate ranging between 19 degrees to 25 degrees. The perfect temperature makes any time the best time for Kudremukh trek. After the end of monsoon, the forest turns lush green with full flow of water in streams.

The place is in full glory after the end of monsoon. So from October to May, in both summer and winter, is the best time for Kudremukh trek. But if your goal is to spot wildlife and execute beautiful photography, the best time for Kudremukh trek are the months from December to February.

During summer time, the mist disappears, making the view clear throughout the forest. Although the forest department keeps the trek closed during summer time because of human caused forest fires. Monsoons get heavy rainfall in western ghats, so if you love rainfall, monsoon is the best time for Kudremukh trek. Trekking in the rain gives you a unique experience.

1. Trekking

Kudremukh national park is a heaven if you are a trekker. It has multiple tracks that pass through rolling hills, covering the Kudremukh trek height and are best to trek on, if you love adventure. 

2. Experience The Amazing Waterfalls

The Kadambi waterfalls and Hanumangundi falls are the most popular waterfalls in Kudremukh national park and are a must see. The water flowing down the rolling hills is a blissful experience to have, while climbing the Kudremukh trek height.

3. Enjoy spotting wildlife

In the park you can enjoy a variety of wild animals like, tiger, leopard, wild dog, Malabar giant squirrel, sloth bear and common Langur. Other than animals, the Kudremukh wildlife sanctuary is home to more than 200 species of birds, which are feast for the eye of birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts. 

How To Reach

If you come by train, you can get down at Mangalore railway station and book a taxi from Mangalore to Kudremukh. Mangalore railway station is 100 kms away from the park. If you are coming through flight the nearest airport is Mangalore airport which is about 130 kms from the park. You can take a taxi from Mangalore and reach the Kudremukh trek.

Another thing to remember is that no vehicle goes directly to the Mullodi village which is the beginning of the trek before covering Kudremukh trek distance. The Kudremukh National Park is linked to nearby cities through road, so if you drive your own vehicle and come through the road, you can take the route through Mangalore. Also buses keep coming regularly so you take the bus as well.

The starting village before you cover the Kudremukh trek distance is Mullodi. From Khalso you reach Mullodi, there you get permission before you begin climbing the Kudremukh trek height. Kudremukh trek distance is 18 kms.  

Things To Note

Start your trek early and finish before it gets dark. Also you would want to go uphill before noon to avoid the heat of the sun. You don’t need to worry about water as water will be available to you during the entire trek, even on the Kudremukh trek height. Keep your bag lighter to travel easily.

Wear shoes with good grip to avoid slipping. If you begin your journey late, guides may suggest you to not go for the trek as it may get dark, and wait for the next day. 50 people are granted permission for the trek, and the price charged is 600 rupees.
